Ah, I knew I’d have to talk about this eventually. Okay let’s get into this.
Honestly, I’m in the “wait and see” camp because I’ve been in this comic game a long time. I’ve seen Peter Parker turn out to be a clone, Wolverine turn into a caveman, Scarlet Witch get possessed by an evil spirit or something (I don’t know it wasn’t really explained) and erase all the mutants, the New 52, and don’t even get me started on what happened to Speedball (poor Speedball).
I know that a lot of people are already jumping in and saying “How dare Marvel come in and change this character, make him a villain, a traitor! This is a disrespect to his creators!” And I’m just standing here like
He could be a double agent, this could be a con, or more than likely the Red Skull is the big villain he’s going up against, and the Red Skull has recently gained the telepathic powers of Professor X, it’s totally possible that he’s using his powers to implant fake memories in Caps brain to make him a Hydra agent. Or remember in Standoff Zemo was trying to create a cosmic cube that would let him rewrite reality, and Skull was hidden there among his army. Zemo had the cube for about a second before he was defeated, before he could use it. But at the end of the story the Skull was walking off as Zemo was defeated and told his daughter that his plans were now in motion. I wouldn’t be surprised if he touched the cube when no one was looking (using his psychic powers so they wouldn’t notice) or just used his Psychic powers on the cube after she turned back into a girl, and used that power to rewrite Roger’s history.
My point is there are lots of explanations for it, I’m sure it will all be fixed, and honestly it’s being written by Nick Spencer who has been killing it on everything he’s done over at Marvel so I’m more than willing to trust him on this. Plus over on the Sam Wilson Captain America series, which is also written by Spencer, he has Sam bring up many times that he had his own history rewritten by a Cosmic Cube before, so it seems like he’s been setting this up all along.
So I’m sure it’s just a storyline, and it could be a great storyline, but in the end it will all be fixed and Cap will be fine. And if you really are so upset about this that you don’t want to read this series anymore, well then just remember that there is another second Captain America book that really does capture the spirit of who Captain America should be, and it needs your business.

Also, good thoughts
